Checking the thermostat batteries would be a great first stop. Not all thermostats have batteries, but a lot do, and these batteries can fail causing the thermostat to lose its functionality controlling your HVAC system. Since the thermostat acts as the brain of the system when it loses power the entire system can shut down. Check your owner’s manual to see how to change the batteries. If your thermostat doesn’t have batteries that would mean, it’s “hard wired” into the electricity your equipment receives. Check your breakers for the HVAC system. There’s many reasons breakers can trip but if your system is down and you need air right away you can try flipping the breakers to see if the system will come back on. After doing so check the thermostat to make sure it is set to run and see if the air will come back on. There can be much larger issues at play and it’s best to at least have your system checked to see if a cause can be found.
Check the light switch. Yeah, sometimes it’s as simple as a switch. Most installations have a combo switch installed onto the side of the furnace or near the furnace. Many home owners confuse this switch if it’s not properly labeled and turn it off. This switch is there for ease of access to cut power off to the furnace or air handler while it is being worked on. Sometimes this switch can get hit, or bumped and you might have the whole system shut down by accident.

Possible simple solutions:
Check your filters if you haven’t done so already. Some systems have safeties that cause the system to shut down if the pressures that it reads are not correct and may be damaging the system. Clogged filters can be a cause of this and it can lead to a lot of issues including shut downs. Filter life spans can vary depending on the home and the activity in the home. Even if you have a 90-day filter or a yearly filter, at least check the filter periodically to ensure the filter isn’t clogged to a point that air flow is blocked. Check to make sure you have gas and electricity turned on. This is more for commercial property owners but from time to time even residential customers run into issues with the gas company. Before calling, verify that the gas is on for your building. Contact your local gas company. The same goes for electricity. If you’re moving into a new suite in a shopping center or you’ve been doing some renovation work make sure that power is on at the meter, this will save you time and money.

Check the filter door to make sure it is properly seated on the furnace. This applies to systems that have the filter rack (where the filter is held) built into the furnace or air handler. If the access panels, or doors as we call them, are not set right a safety switch will cause the system not to power own to protect the system and also to protect you from the hazards of the inner workings of the system.
Water safety switch might be tripped causing the system to shut down. If your system has a water safety switch installed, then it’s possible it might have been tripped. Most of the time these are tripped for good reasons protecting your home and equipment. There are many models and brands of these switches and some are easy to reset, and some are not. The first step is usually to vacuum out the water in a drain pan, this usually can get you back up and running temporarily until a service tech can arrive. But be aware, water safety switches are sensitive and dealing with not so clean water, so they can fail from time to time.
