As the sweltering days of summer begin to wane, September arrives in Atlanta with a promise of cooler temperatures and crisp, refreshing breezes. However, for those familiar with the city’s unpredictable climate, it’s wise to keep your air conditioning at the ready – after all, Atlanta is known for its lingering summer heat well into the early fall months.
September: A Time of Transition
As the leaves start to turn and pumpkin spice everything begins to make its annual comeback, September marks a transitional period in Atlanta’s climate. While daytime temperatures may still soar into the 80s and 90s, evenings bring a welcome reprieve with cooler, more comfortable conditions. It’s the perfect time to give your air conditioning system a well-deserved break during the cooler nights while still keeping it primed for those scorching midday sunbursts.

A Recipe for Sweet Success: Pineapple Upside Down Cake
And now, for no reason at all – here’s a recipe for a classic dessert that’s sure to delight your taste buds: Pineapple Upside Down Cake!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 can (20 oz) pineapple slices in juice, drained, juice reserved
- 1 jar (6 oz) maraschino cherries without stems, drained
- 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ yellow cake mix
- Vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box
Instructions:
- Heat oven to 350°F. In 13×9-inch pan, melt butter in oven. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over melted butter. Arrange pineapple slices on brown sugar. Place cherry in center of each pineapple slice.
- Add enough water to reserved pineapple juice to measure 1 cup. Make cake batter as directed on box, substituting pineapple juice mixture for the water. Pour batter over pineapple and cherries.
- Bake 42 to 48 minutes (44 to 53 minutes for dark or nonstick pan) or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Immediately run knife around side of pan to loosen cake. Place heatproof serving plate upside down onto pan; turn plate and pan over. Leave pan over cake a few minutes so brown sugar topping can drizzle over cake; remove pan. Cool 30 minutes. Serve warm or cool. Store covered in refrigerator.
